Books - Awaken (The Patronus) by Sarah M Ross

I will preface this review by sharing that I met Sarah in 1998 when we both were freshmen at the University of Pittsburgh so there may be a small amount of bias in that I know the author. That being said I was really pleased with how well she did on this book. The characters were engaging and we really dug into what makes Lucy tick from the get go. The world Sarah has built is very solid and I like that she didn't spend a huge amount of time trying to make sense of it all just told you like it is any you get to go along for the ride. I found out that the version of the book I got was an early release and the typos were caught and are not in the current version on the Kindle Store. My only real complaint would be with the editor or designer as there were a few typographical mistakes that I would have expected to be caught. My other complaint is that it ended so soon. I read the last quarter of the book in one night because I was so engrossed in it. I hit the last page and it felt like I hit a brick wall. I just wanted more of it.

I enjoyed the character interaction and development and liked that there were personal emotional connections in the story and did not include the smut that has begun to creep into some of the YA books. It was a very enjoyable read and I look forward to book two and seeing where this all goes.

One of the best books I have read recently. It was fun to get out of the paranormal books for a bit. I have to say that I came into this book knowing really nothing about the story. I didn't even read a summary or such it had just come up on the Amazon free book of the day list and I knew the title so I picked it up. That was may of 2010 and finally after the new year I was flipping through the back log of books I haven't read yet and came across it. I didn't have any series to work on and was looking for something different. This really hit the spot. The book was well written considering that it was a translation. The story really was compelling and it hooked me very early on. I will admit that about 50 pages in I was a bit confused and ended up going back to the first chapter to try to nail down the times that things were happening because I had somewhere along the line mistakenly mixed up some of the characters but once I was straight I worked my way through the story. I was able to put it down to begin with but I think I read that last 200 pages or so of the story in a single night because the pace had just picked up so much and I had to know more.

Really a great read and I somewhat look forward to the movie to see that interpretation though the follow up books are on my wish list now.

Books - Shadow Heir: A Dark Swan Novel by Richelle Mead

So this is the first book I had read in a while where I really felt like I needed to hash out my thoughts on it. I will warn you that there will be spoilers in this so feel free to skip it until you read it... I would like to say that you could read on and then decide if you want to read it but that defeats the idea and I am not going to go so far as to say that you shouldn't read the book. It was still a decent story... It is just the last book in the story and it didn't feel like a smooth landing more like a rocky bumpy had to use the emergency slide landing.

Now to my thoughts.

I read the first book in this series in paper a bit before the second book came out then picked up the rest either the day they came out or pre-ordered them on the kindle. This one I bought on release day and then had to push through reading the book I was already half way through so that I could get into this one. I started it on Monday night and finished it off Thursday night. Not the fastest but pretty fast for a busy week.

I was just really disappointed in some of the character and plot decisions that were made. There were many points where I understand that Eugenie has a problem with doing as she says and the banter back and forth with Dorian where he suddenly is to be trusted felt like a drastic shift in this book. Reflecting on the other books I guess you could say that he had a greater good in mind but not really and it wasn't where those stories were leading you. He was/is manipulative and while he loves her in this book and may have loved her in the others there wasn't a slow transition where there is a realization or such it is just, bang, he loves her and will do anything she asks. It did not feel true to the rest of the series.

Then there is the issue of Pagiel... I honestly can't remember him in the other books. Maybe at the end of the 3rd one but he just wasn't memorable. It really feels like this one was thrown in to give the last book a bit of a toss up and plot twist. He also dies so spectacularly poorly. "Aw your dead dood!" If she was able to kill that easily why the hell didn't she just do that to Eugenie and be done with it. Little spell and the problem with the babies is done... no fuss no muss.

Now to the part of the story that just pissed me off. People may complain about her leaving her kids in the NICU to go off for months. I can buy that. Parents go off to war with their new born babies at home... They do it because that is their job and they do what they have to. In this she is tied to the land so it is even more personal that she needed to fix the problem. I did half expect that there was going to be a double crossing in there and she would not come back to find the babies and they would have been kidnapped but that is another thing. My problem comes with the information that it is Dorian that is the father. That would have been okay as a zinger at the end but here it is tossed out and leads to wrecking the end of the story. I could understand even debating about telling Dorian and then choosing not to tell him if there was another book in the works as honestly Kiyo is going to tell him... At some point something is going to happen where he either wants to cause a rift for strategic gain or just to get back at them for something and he will toss out "oh yeah what do you think of Eugenie leaving your kids in the human world with all that metal and technology to irritate them?... Oh you didn't know they were yours?... I would have thought Eugenie would have shared that with you sometime in the past 10 years..." And then you have a rift that will happen. If it doesn't go that long then it will be that Eugenie will give in herself because she feels bad about keeping secrets when she has harped and harped on him the whole time about not trusting her.

And that leads me to the fact that while Eugenie was a flawed hero the entire rest of the series she was still a hero and always tried to do the right thing. In this ending she gets to live a lie and be everything she hated about Dorian and suddenly he is the hero being good and thinking about others first. Really why would you do that at the ending. If this was the transition book setting up the character flaws for the next story it would be cool but no we are just ending it here and here is a very dirty sad place.

I will admit that I really need to spend the time to write down family trees or something similar for some of these series. While I had the main characters down pretty well there were many names that I just couldn't place from the other books because they were just too similar of names and the inter-relationships were too hard to keep track of. The She is mated to him but that didn't work so she is now married to him and he used to be married to her but now the other her is married to the ex-mate of the first one but has feelings for the other guy. That really is what I felt like many of the times when they were going through the relationships. So I just started to ignore them and concentrated on the story.

It is a solid twisty turny who is behind the actions story with some interesting if static characters. They had their faults but those tended to define them and be something they were okay with and had come to terms with as you would have to after hundreds of years.

Books - A Wind in the Door by Madeleine L'Engle

And we join Meg, Calvin and Charles Wallace very shortly after they returned from their adventures in A Wrinkle in Time. This installment really had much more meat to it than the first outing and I have to say that I was pleased to see more climaxes in the book. Having three tasks to complete set it up to have three turning points in the story as opposed to the two that were in Wrinkle (though really the second one was much too short in the first book)

We get to experience some new friends and expand the personalities of Meg primarily and Calvin to a lesser degree. Meg really becomes a more likable character as she goes through this book with far less whining and more doing. It made me smile to follow a strong lead character. I look forward to the next installment.

Books - A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle

So as the story goes I was reading a post on slashdot and there was a reference to the tesseract. I read it but wasn't putting it into context but remembered that it came from a children's book. After a bit of googling and links on wikipedia I then knew the definition but couldn't remember how it played into the original book. I looked at the price of the book on Amazon for either paper or digital and just didn't want to pay $7 for a book that was so short. Luck would have it shortly there after we ended up at the local library for a cub scout meeting and they had a copy on the shelf.

What I have realized is that it really is a short book for children. As I rolled into page 150 or so and they had just gotten to the CENTRAL Central Intelligence building I was just getting into the build up of the story and it came to a really crashing halt at the end as I really wanted it to keep going and give me a bit more of the give and take of a more mature story. I admit that there are 4 more books in the series so everything didn't need to be wrapped up in this book but I would have loved to have more.

That being said she really did a wonderful job of creating interesting and deep characters. While they play to their stereotypes they have more depth than many modern characters. (yes I'm talking about you Bella and Edward) Amazingly she managed to paint a world that more so than not has stood up the the test of time. Instead of getting hung up on the technology of the day such that it feels dated after even a few years we have a story where the details are about the characters rather than the cell phone they carried or the particular gun the were packing, not that there were either in this book.

It is an interesting twist with a much harder "who-done-it?" but with fewer twists. It did bring much more depth to the characters this go 'round. While the vampires do not 'change' during the book's time they do have the chance to tell more of the history and explain more how they ended up where they are. The action section at the end really was a nail bitter but at the same time I was left asking "why" a lot with Jane's actions. I accept that if your only tool is a hammer you look at everything as a nail. But in Jane's case while the hammer may be her biggest and best tool she does have a screwdriver and pliers in her toolbag that might be able to deal with the screw and bolt more effectively. I will just chock it up to the fact that she doesn't really sleep during most of this book and can't make good decisions.

This book was an interesting twist on the paranormal genera. It is typical for the supernaturals to be in hiding from the public or to be out in the open but to have the main character be a kind of supernatural that no one knows about and trying to keep that way while being so close to vampires that are totally out to the public was a new dynamic.

I will say that at times when the inner monologues happen it was a bit hard to read though that may have been due to the different formatting of the kindle ebook and would have looked better on paper and been more distinct. But baring that it was a very well put together "who done it?" with enough twists that you really don't know who it is until the moment the killer is unmasked.

This is the 3rd book in the series. After finishing the series it really feels like she wrote a single long book and then with a few edits broke it into 3 individual volumes. The advantage to it is that unlike most books in a series there isn't 100 pages of "and this happened in the last book" to have to dig though. She does give some little reminders but they are thrown in as a single sentence or at most a paragraph. I did find it hard to follow at points because of differing states of reality and "dream sequences" that had to be taken as symbolic as opposed to the primary reality of the story.

Overall you are looking at ~1000 pages for the series and the writing is very vivid while not being excruciatingly verbose. Anyone who has read anything by Laurell K. Hamilton will understand that sometimes it can just be too much detail. Spending 2 pages to describe the new character can turn the reader off them instead of endearing them. It is twice as bad if the character is introduced in a suspenseful time and you have broken the reader's drive to see what is going to happen. Much as Tripod asks for in King Kong Ms. Hunter "gets to the monkey".

Books - Seraphs by Faith Hunter

I read the first book in the series over the Christmas Holiday. The basic word is ~100 years in the future after the Christian style Apocalypse happens. A very large part of the population die and the world has some major shifts in weather. There is also the side effect that there are now Angels (Seraphs) on earth along with Darkness (devils/demons) and neomages and a few other cross breeds.

The story is about Thorn who is a stone mage who was outed in the last book. Over all they are well written and in the family of Female written sci-fi/fantasy books these would not qualify as smut. While there are many relationships and character interaction plays a main role in the plot it is a very solid story that spins through the first book and fully into the second one with less of an end and more of a pause at the finish of each book.

I realized that last year I read a large number of books due to the kindle app but that I didn't really have a quantified list of them and I didn't spend any time reflecting on them. Admittedly many of them are not worth reflecting on and were just for the fun of the story there were others that could have benefited from a bit of reflection or at least forcing myself to create my own summary to see what I took away from the books. So you dear reader (of which there is probably only one or two of since I removed this blog from my google buzz) will get to see what stories I have been reading and follow me on my quest to see how many books I read this year.

I shoveled that railing off 2 hours ago.

The first thing I cleared off was the railing when I started to clear the deck. By the time I was done clearing it (three times) this is how much snow was back on the first part of the deck. It took 3 times to get the snow cut down to the point that I could clear it before a few inches had accumulated back on the deck by the time I got to the other side.

We had to go out again around 3 or 4 to clear the deck again. And then another time Sunday morning before shoveling out the cars. There was a lot of snow.

This spring there is about twice the amount of leaves and there were flowers that showed up. There you only have the one on the right side that has bloomed but as of this morning there were another handful of them.

This is one of the other help desk guy's cars. He used to commute much farther on Rt 7.

for anyone that doesn't know what Rt7 is, it is Route 7 inVirginia. It runs from Winchester through Leesburg to Tysons Corner and on to DC. It is a 4 to 6 lane road with a red light ever .1 to .5 mile. It seems like it would be a fast road but between the traffic backups and red lights it can be murder.

This is a picture of the house from the front.

There was more off to the right but the battery on my phone gave out and I wasn't able to get more pictures. It was also why they didn't get posted at the time as I somewhat forgot about needing to upload them.

It was a really cool display and the couple was out front greating everyone. They start putting things up in September and they have it on from Thanksgiving 'til New Years. They said that they usually have it all taken down by the 10th of January. When they started it they were able to store everything in the area under the house (houses in OBX are on stilts with sheds built under them due to the chance of high water) but a few years ago they had to start renting a storage unit to keep it all. They had no idea how many lights there are but they encourage anyone that wants to count them to come out and have fun. They also don't have a map of the layout as it changes every year based on their mood and a bit on what items might have been damaged during storage, use or transport. They also give out candy canes and other treats for the kids and while they don't charge anything for the display they appreciate any donations they get. I can understand that as I am sure their electric meter probably looks about like the one on the Griswald house in National Lampoons Christmas Vacation.

This picture is from "The Christmas House" in the Outerbanks of North Carolina. They have one of the largest and most complex light shows I have seen in a private home. They even have it set up so that people can walk through sections of it. You can even walk on their deck and look in the windows of the house because they decorate the inside too. We actualy wondered where they could find a place with a bit of privacy and decided that they must pretty much have the bedroom and bathroom upstairs and then the kitchen in the back as their only private spaces.

This picture is the right side of the yard and is down a bit of a hill. The house in the back of the picture is a small guest house with a single room.

So I was slow on making the post part of this entry but atleast the picture got put up. Conner had a great time collecting the treats and general explaining the difference between a Transformer and Power Rangers/SpaceMen.

Still we have way too much candy as there were many places that gave out full bars not just the little snack ones. I had to empty the candy basket before we put the new stuff in because we still had candy from last Halloween. Hopefully we have the same problem next year or else we are eating way too much candy.

Ed had his annual party and the theme this year was English Pub. We went with ideas for people you would see in the pub. I was an America college student complete with bandanna, long hair and a backpack. Jackie was some real person from the royal family. Josh came as a tourist with goofy hat, flower shirt, camera, and little umbrellas in his drinks. Tasha went with the archtype of a Brit Glam Girl. She looked awesome even if the poorly lit camera phone picture doesn't show it as well.

Just an update on how princess is doing in the office. There are these long limbs that have sprouted out that are a few feet long. At this point they have been wrapped back around the main plant just to not take over the office.

We took Monday off as a vacation day. We slept in then went to Panara for a late breakfast. We were going to try to go to Oakland to see the Cathedral of learning but decided we didn't want to drive that far and then decided to check out HellBoy 2. The first showing was at 1:10 and it was a good bit before noon at that point so we went to Starbucks to get cool blended drinks and sit in the comfy chairs. That is where this picture was taken. Tasha ended up on the phone for a couple of minutes and I was sitting there looking at how cute she was and decided I should have a picture of it on my phone. And now you have it too.

After the movie we went to Pearl Vision and both got our eyes checked and I am now again the happy wearer of contacts. I had forgotten how awesome it was to not wear glasses as I had fallen off the wagon a few years back during a change up in my insurance and while looking at laser options and never got a new refill of lenses. Tasha got new silver and purple frames and there will be pictures as soon as they come in because she looks amazing in them.

There is a new limb that got to be about 3 feet long and a few others that are new that are a bit shorter still.

You can also see the orange tree starting to the left. It came from a seed that I jokingly planted in Princess's pot last winter and it sprouted so I moved it to a pot of its' own.
